Description
Maila Nurmi was a Finnish-American actress who created the campy 1950s character VAMPIRA whom she portrayed as television’s first horror host for KABC-TV in 1954. Inspired by Morticia Addams from The New Yorker cartoons by Charles Addams, Nurmi had worn a black outfit to a masquerade party and it inspired a television producer to have her host a late night movie show. Nurmi portrayed the character like the Dragon Lady from the Terry and the Pirates comic strip. She went on to use the image of Vampira in a few low budget films, including PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE.
